I am on events sabbatical.

Actually, I'm busy organising my own 40th birthday party/mini-fest on the Cowal peninsula featuring guests from as far afield as New York to Norway. Live set from taperecorder (Je Suis Galactique, USA) and DJ sets from Dave Barbarossa (Wild Combination), A-Man & Gerard (Tangent), Beng Ibson (Thunderbug), Samantha Bagg (B*Licious), DJ Dandy (Disco X) and, of course, yours truly.

And so, instead of promoting events I will be focussing on audio engineering and production work for the first half of the year. However, I can be found DJing in Chinaski's Bar every second Sunday from 3pm until 7pm playing very chilled sounds from the more obscure end of the spectrum.

Also, later in the year expect to hear me at festivals around the UK....details to follow.

Tut Vu Vu:
Describing themselves as "the love child of Anaïs Nin and David Lynch" seems as deliberately obtuse and slyly humorous as it is helpful. Mutating out of the sludge left by Uncle John & Whitelock, Tut Vu Vu's unique sound is a far more well-developed, sophisticated creature than its predecessor's. Yet at the same time it is decidedly freer, looser and even more chaotic. With influences in jazz, kraut-rock, swamp blues, mutant swing and sinister alien-sounding lounge and with some members deeply involved in the arts the overall essence the band exudes is one steeped in such highly creative juices that they smell as experimental and, dare I say, avant-garde, as they do of rock 'n' roll. Often inter-changing instruments mid-show, the group can be seen to play clarinet, organs and two drum kits one minute to bass, synths and oscillators the next.
Arguably the best band in Glasgow for some time now, they are a definite must-see.

Williwaw:
"The finest in amplified ukulele mayhem".
Illinois-born williwaw's layered loops and effects turns his ukelele into a multi-faceted beast which when accompanied by his usual smorgasbord of rare found video results in a multimedia performance comparable, perhaps, to some sort of warped Steve Reich on acid.
If you're going to push me, I'd say Williwaw is a blend of shoegaze and post-rock, but to try and pin down his style is probably missing the point. His music is supposed to be an enigma, an intriguing fusion of electronic and acoustic sound, which bemuses yet beguiles.
With an amplifier and some complex time signatures, his ukulele can generate a cauldron of noise, but it is also capable of transcending the chaos with a blissful melody. It can be heavy, while also ambient. Basically, no song is at all like the last.

"Edward 'Teddy' Edwards is one of the great unsung heros of British
light music electronica. His achievements would seem to place him as a key figure in the evolution of analog and digital sound - his application of the linear feedback shift register (LFSR) to music in the 1970s is referred to (uncredited!) in both Curtis Roads' 'The Computer Music Tutorial' (1996) and Hal Chamberlin's 'Musical Applications of Microprocessors' (1980), and it was his home-brew ring-modulator circuit which was used by Desmond Briscoe and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to produce the infamous Goon Show effect 'Major Bloodnock's Stomach'; yet, despite that, his current stature lies somewhere between cult figure and complete unknown. In some ways this may be due to his taste – or perhaps lack of taste – in music. Had he turned his talents to serialism or the acousmatic he might today be hailed as a British Stockhausen or Boulez; instead his career is marked by a series of semi-doomed attempts at 'Electronic Light Music', including such projects as 'The Ted Edwards Electr-O-Matic Orchestra' (1961), 'Dancing Diodes' (1974), and 'ET Edwards and the Magnetic Moments' (1981)."
None of this is true, incidentally, but should give you an idea of what might happen.

Taperecorder
Hailing from the more indie-centric side of electronic music, Marc Francis was the mastermind behind legendary house music collective Intergalactic Faerie Funk and the folkier Mossyrock. Now, this restless soul has been reincarnated under the name Taperecorder; creating swingy-swag dreamy-dirty dancefloor shoegaze rife with tales of odysseys, chance encounters, detours, and epiphanies.

With his ramshackle, bargain basement, punk rock approach to technology, taperecorder's improv-heavy live shows are characterized by his signature squelchy beats infused with found sounds, acoustic doodlings, and the occasional singalong.

Skizzwang
"The secret bastard child of Delia Derbyshire and Klaus Wunderlich playing freestyle knee-bending toe-bop with a mild touch of swonk."
Using a microphone, a variety of drum machines/keyboards, some additional nonsense and an echo/delay box Skizzwang creates off-kilter acidic wonk by adding sounds, on by one (sometimes even two by two) into a loop pedal. The result is often a bizzare and wholly unanticipated sonic bewilderment that builds periodically with every repetition of the original loop until at one point, one sound/note/noise is added that puts the rhythm and/or melody into perspective and a coherent arrangement is produced.

For this one-off Halloween spectacular costumed revellers will be experiencing more than just live music, Djing and story-telling. Visual stimulation abounds. Props, costumes, lighting and mysterious treats will be in store courtesy of 85A (hot from their Electric Spectacle at the Secret Garden Party), including a custom-designed set for Organs of Love. Also on board will be Mingo-Go (Death Disco, Boteco Intimo) playing a spooky, seductive, sinister selection, warming up for the first of the evening's spectacles – story-telling in a particularly grim vein. Combining wicked humour with the macabre, Grim(m) Tales are Louna Productions' (Louisa Thornton and Anna Lehr) take on the more gruesome side of the brothers Grimm. Having recently finished a month of shows at the Edinburgh festival to rave reviews this is a chance for those who missed seeing them to catch a small selection of their repertoire here in Glasgow. Following in their dark footsteps will be The Executioner making a brief mysterious appearance behind the grinding wheels of steel before Organs Of Love take to the stage. The Organs, who have been creating quite a stir of late and who have just recently been signed by Optimo Music and whose highly anticipated EP will be released in January 2012, will be performing a 'special Halloween set' just for the occasion, adding a darker, even sleazier edge to their usual warped brand of sexotronica. Finishing off the evening's proceedings, The Executioner returns, mixing vinyl and laptop in wild abandonment to propel disguised revellers further over the edge and well on their way into the mystic night.

Mondo Scuro presents Organs of Love (LIVE) + GK Machine

Almost impossible to categorise, Organs of Love is the latest project in the long and varied musical career of Jim McKinven (Berlin Blondes, Altered Images, One Dove). Essentially a duo, McKinven is accompanied by Alecia Mathews on vocals & percussion. You may have noticed that female singers seem to be the one common thread tying these last three groups together. However, there the comparisons between this and McKinven's previous projects end. Moving away from the slick productions of One Dove and the indie-pop of Altered Images, Organs of Love is a veritable behemoth of lo-fi weirdness that sounds like it's come oozing straight out of some seedy swamp dive on Saturn.

Using an enormous 2-tier organ complete with bass pedals, a Novation bass-station, a cheap drum machine, effects and a guitar that occasionally gets kicked sideways into producing sheets of shrieking sound, combined with the mysterious lady's operatic vocal outbursts and chanteuse-style crooning yields an overall product that can most easily be classed as electro-cabaret meets gothic synthabilly which has then hitched a ride into space on a wave of bass and distortion. Yet esoteric this is not. Organs of Love's songs are as catchy and mesmerising as they are original.

Definitely one not to miss if you want something completely refreshing that's likely to propel you to dance if your soul and your feet like beats dark and dirty.

Support comes from GK Machine on decks and laptop playing a mix of original music and new wave, no wave, afro-beat, psychobilly, techno, voodoo funk, electro and acid rock with "old kid on the block" Henry Fondler freaking, tweaking, bubbling and squeaking around here, there and everywhere, apparently.

Brooklyn's Marc Hug aka Taperecorder stops off in Glasgow on his European tour in May/June 2011.

Tprcrdr has been ploughing his own furrow for over a decade. With his ice cream tray strapped on and laptop connected to his nano-synth in lieu of cones and waffles, Tprcrdr has the amazing ability to play his mandolin, melodica and mouth organ live and on the move whilst producing occasional chopped drifting vocals all at the same time, whether it be in a street carnival in Berlin, an outdoor party in a Canadian evergreen forest, or on a beach in Iceland.

Having been the man behind Intergalactic Fairie Funk in the 90s and later Mossyrock, Marc's organic instrumentaion stylings belie his technical adeptness and programming wizardry. His skill as a musician and producer, if not unparalleled, is certainly unique.
We are blessed to have landed a gig with Tprcrdr in Glasgow's most anticipated new venue: Stereo's new sister venue, The Old Hairdressers, across from Stereo in Renfield Lane. The new bar, which features two rooms, mezzanine and nice decor, opens in two weeks time, and is already looking amazing, intimate and warm - ideal for hearing Marc's take on things.

Accompanying Tprcrdr will be GK Machine and Spudd, playing electronica, seedy soundtracks, 70s minimal, obscure library music, ambient beats, world treats, analogue experiments and vocal serenades. A laidback atmosphere with enough energy to satisfy even mild cases of Saturday Night Fever.

This month's musical rampage with GK Machine, B*Licious and Commander Fuck brings a special guest appearance from Gerard Bell aka DJ Panic of Tangent (Sub Club).
Gerard has been lurking around the underground dance scene for many years, firstly as Brainticket, then as co-founder of the Sonora crew (which Optimo's Twitch was also a founder of).
Gerard went on to form Tangent which ran at the Sub Club for three years on a Friday night which featured a stellar array of guests, including first appearances in Glasgow of DJ Cosmo, Tim "Love" Lee, DJ Harvey, Legion Of Green Men, Dobre & Jamez and many more and which almost propelled him and DJ-partner A-Man into the star-spangled limelight they deserved! But, as we know, talent is invariably inversely proportional to fame!
Gerard has also been special guest at numerous Melting Pot boat parties, New Year's parties, one-off events and many many more. This fellow is indeed truly wonderful and his skill at mixing all manner of styles together into a cutting-edge collage of amazingly out-there dance music is as inspiring and pleasureable to watch as it is to hear and dance to!
Combined with the incredible talents of GK Machine and B*Licious (the latter just back from performing at Croatia's Garden Zadar festival) and their mysterious musical cohort Commander Fuck the night is certain to provide aural pleasures unavailable elsewhere in this dear green place!!

Following the club launch in May, ZooMuzik welcomes Chris G from Brighton collective Soft Rocks to the basement at Blackfriars in Glasgow, for a disco- fuelled DJ set on Friday 19th June.

Four-piece Brighton collective Soft Rocks are responsible for setting the music and club-land scenes ablaze with their edits, productions and DJ sets. As well as producing and DJing, they’re heavy-duty record collectors who have gained a reputation for discovering many lost classics. Their sets embrace a variety of styles from rock, house, Afro, boogie, disco, cosmic, Balearic, and Italo – if it’s heavyweight music you want– Soft Rocks are out there on their own.

2008 saw Soft Rocks put out releases on Eskimo, Lo Recordings, and their own label Soft Rocks Recordings – with a fantastic remix for the mighty MGMT, CRUE-L in Japan, and Black Pepper in Italy. Having clocked up performances at many of the leading festivals last year including The Big Chill, Bestival, Connect and the Garden Zadar, and with another five releases scheduled for 2009, it's understandable that the music press have been touting them as new leaders of the leftfield disco scene.

Eyes and ears peeled for a new night on the town - a musical rampage by the name of Zoo Muzik.

This new night is a collaboration between GK Machine & DJ B*Licious launching on Saturday 23 May and from then on on the third Friday of the month in Blackfriars basement.

The two have often worked together in the past but the time seemed right to combine their talents further. Their musical paths have crossed at seemingly the right time, not just for both of them in their musical development, but as regards the current musical climate, GK's background in fully-charged turbo-tech and BL's in funk has merged on a common ground of psychedelic dancefloor grooves that are not simply for habitual clubbers or weekend hedonists that don't even know why they do it, but for musical movers, alive and kicking, and with a select taste in sound who really know how to party wild....but most of all it's for that often forgotten aspect of commercial clubbing -basic, animalistic, primal, high - the spiritual feeling of a community gathering, moving, feeling dancing as one - a deeper primal connection, where the mind stops and the body starts. It may sound stupid in this day and age but it's a form of ritual that touches us all in some way whether we understand why or not. But we all recognise that it's usually only when you free your self that you realise you were trapped! So we want to help unleash your beast via the art of music. And so we made it....Zoo Muzik!!

Area 51's New Year's Day Psychic Wipeout, Nice 'n' Sleazy, 1 January 2009

This infamous Bachannalian knees up has garnered quite a reputation for itself over the 14 years it's been running in Sleazy's basement. Originally started as a weekly Sunday evening session in the upstairs bar by three young upstarts (Jules, Shaft and GK Machine) with a mutual love of house music and techno, the first New Year's Day party, which was intended simply as a continuation of the night before, went down so well on that fateful 1st January 1995 that we decided to continue it, nurture it, love it, abuse it until it grew well beyond the sum of its parts. We have had numerous guest DJs including DJ/JD Twitch (several times), Dom Sinclair (Disco X), Stu C (Bullet Proof), DJ Loco (Saturday Night Beaver) and many more, so that now, in 2008/2009, despite only happening once every year, it's a party that people now look forward to as much as new year itself and has become an integral part of the Glasgow Hogmanay festivities while those Sunday evening sessions are no more than a fading memory that soon will be forgotten.

Long since has the music policy crumbled away from anything even resembling a 'policy' and now we provide nothing but the best disco-dancing jive-assed, free-style freakbeat, acid, systematic, electric, pneumatic turbo-charged party soundtrack this side of Hell!!

And music is just a part of it. But also what makes this happen is the vibe. The atmosphere here. Always wild, always relaxed. Loose in ways rarely seen. Partly due to the often stressful event that is New Year's Eve and partly because the ones who did enjoy the night before are still going there is a tendency for the hedonism to be extremely full-on....yet the atmosphere is undeniably filled with a carefree looseness and light-hearted fun rather than the sort of intensity apparent from the night before. Generally bad behaviour and lots of wild dancing. Special!

This year, God forbid, will be no different. :)

Mondo Scuro presents Yoodoo Voodoo - with DJs GK Machine, DJ Dandy and Suzie Hipsnake - on Friday 11 May. This was intended as the launch night for a monthly residency but unfortunately, due to problems with the management (the events co-ordinator and the management fell out resulting in the management telling us "we're not mainstream enough" - ha ha - did they not hear me play Hot Chocolate last time??), so this night, instead, is a one-off event and will be the last Mondo Scuro/Yoodoo Voodoo until a new venue is found. We hope it'll be a busy one though so would be nice to see you.

For those who haven't been, you can expect electro-disco, mutant punk, turbo-dub, acid rock, cyber-elastic sex music, brain-slicing techno riddims, some heads down, no nonsense voodoo funk, a laptop set mixing things like The Cramps, Little Annie, The Slits and Can all over a driving, psychedelic rhythm backing and, most of all, the main result you'll get will be some wild-style party music and, as ever, a 'marvellously pleasant' atmosphere.

Hey ho. The Mondo Scuro cohorts, robots and management have planned another night of funk, frolics and fazers...and we're pleased to announce that this time around we have the added talent of one of Glasgow's finest!!!

Extra speciale, persona grata, Gerard of veteran Glasgow club pioneers 'Tangent' will be making a welcome appearance alongside resident rocker DJ Dandy. Expect disco with a twist, punk with a funk and beats for your feets.

The place to be is the ever reliable Basura Blanca under the Brunswick Hotel. Doors open at 10 and close at 2 so get there early to avoid disappointment or just to have more fun.

We are go!

The long-awaited second installment of the mysterious Mondo Scuro 'happenings' is this coming Friday, 9 June. No flyers are circulating for this event so it's friends, lovers and family only. Capacity, as you know, is limited plus it's an early one with doors at 10 and closing at 2 so best get there sharpish so you can dance for the maximum length of time - that's four hours by the way so get your dancing shoes on. And tell your friends and get them rallied!

And to top it all off the first 50 people will get a free mix-CD. Not only that, you can sign up to our mailing list at the door to make finding out about future Mondo Events that little bit easier. Wow!

On that note, we're very pleased also to announce that our friends at the Sub Club are giving us a Friday night there too but that's another story...we'll keep you posted.

Hogmanay + New Year's Day Gigs

After playing a set there on Monday 19 December with Belle & Sebastian's Chris Geddes, Monsieur Machine has been asked to DJ at an exclusive all-nighter in the Southside Studios, 17 Westmoreland Street off Victoria Road. This'll be rockin' so get your dancing shoes on. Other DJs and bands yet to be confirmed. The space is amazing and very intimate. Party starts at 10.00 doors will be locked by 11.00 and party will continue until very, very late. £10 ticket includes an, as yet, unspecified number of free drinks. And if that's not a bargain at this time of year what is?

New Year's Day 2006

Once again Area 51 - Jules, Shaft and yours truly - will be hosting our annual New Year's Day party in Nice 'n' Sleazy's basement. These events are usually jam-packed and full of fun. Expect lights, videos, decor and a great atmosphere not to mention those sounds and plenty of dancing. Doors at 8pm, close at 1am. Free entry.

You are cordially invited to Mungo's Hi-Fi "Dub n Grub" night at Stereo on Thursday next week. That'll be Thursday 20 October. GK Machine under his Golden Monkey guise will be spinning some dub and reggae at the start of the night, 8pm til 9.30/10.00, so come down early to get a seat. These nights are usually jam-packed and the food is delicious.

Twisted Roots Volumes One & Two now finished and doing the rounds. Volume One already being met with appreciation from as far afield as the US of A and the Land of Oz.
